THE FUNDAMENTAL PRESUMPTIONS OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

 Dear readers and friends,

Also today a coaching article on injured people and their identification.  This article also has the function of helping if accompanied by sincere introspection, because as I always repeat: no one can lie to themselves and it is useless to make fun of yourself. These articles stimulate self-understanding, acceptance, change where you can and above all love yourself. As in every Life Coaching context we are examining, there are only small explanations and many questions. Finding these answers is our task, discovering ourselves to then improve ourselves and loving ourselves for who we are is the ultimate goal. As has already been said in several articles:

“A question at the right time can change your life or at least the vision you have of it.”

Obviously anyone who needs help must contact the staff assigned to do so, contact them!

Every life science has a set of fundamental assumptions under which it operates.

The core assumptions of CBT are based on the assumption that the quality of our thoughts influences how we relate to our life experiences.

This means that the attitude and approach we take towards life, relationships and people will influence the outcomes we experience throughout life. Likewise, the core ideas of the assumptions from which we operate as CBT therapists will determine how effective we will be when working with other people.

  • PEOPLE ARE PROCESSORS OF EXPERIENCE RATHER THAN PASSIVE VICTIMS OF CIRCUMSTANCES.
  • PEOPLE ARE NOT BROKEN ENTITIES THAT NEED TO BE REPAIRED: THEY JUST NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD.
  • IF PEOPLE LEARN USELESS WAYS OF THINKING, THEY CAN ALSO EASILY UNLEARN THEM.
  • EACH PERSON IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, ACTIONS AND BEHAVIORS.
  • WE CANNOT CONTROL THE THOUGHTS THAT ENTER OUR MIND, BUT WE CAN CHOOSE TO ACT ON THEM OR NOT.
  • ALL PEOPLE HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE A NEW SET OF HABITS, THOUGHT PATTERNS AND BEHAVIORS.
  • THE MEANING OF OUR COMMUNICATIONS IS DETERMINED BY OTHER PEOPLE, NOT BY US.
  • BEING BETTER IS BETTER THAN FEELING BETTER.
  • OUR INTERNAL WORLD IS MANIFESTED IN OUR EXTERNAL WORLD.
  • PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE.
  • WHAT WE FOCUS ON HAS AN EMOTIONAL CONSEQUENCE.
  • PATCHES DO NOT HEAL WOUNDS.

PEOPLE ARE PROCESSORS OF EXPERIENCE RATHER THAN PASSIVE VICTIMS OF CIRCUMSTANCES

Humans are meaning-making machines: perception is not truth. To grow, we must become skilled at looking at our interpretations and perceptions of life from multiple perspectives to arrive at a more balanced and grounded conclusion.

PEOPLE ARE NOT BROKEN ENTITIES THAT NEED TO BE REPAIRED: THEY JUST NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD

People who believe they are broken entities unconsciously adhere to the belief that they need to be "fixed." Therefore, they spend their lives waiting for someone to come into their life to do so: they need a certain person to be a certain way to make them feel a certain way.

IF PEOPLE LEARN USELESS WAYS OF THINKING, THEY CAN EVEN EASILY UNLEARN THEM

People easily get trapped in their ways of thinking that are usually rooted in their interpretations of past events. People are not victims of what happens to them, but rather are autonomous beings who can regain their power by changing their responses to circumstances.

EACH PERSON IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, ACTIONS AND BEHAVIORS

We do not gain power in an area of our lives until we take full responsibility for it.

It empowers us because this rationality frees us from the need for other people to intervene for us and make things better. In most cases, it is our thoughts that disturb us the most in life rather than other people and circumstances; meaning that taking responsibility for your thoughts equates to more effective emotional management.

WE CANNOT CONTROL THE THOUGHTS THAT ENTER OUR MIND, BUT WE CAN CHOOSE TO ACT ON THEM OR NOT

Many people assume that because they believe something is true, it is true. However, both thoughts and feelings are fleeting entities: they come and go (provided we let them). The assumptions that influence us most in life continue to form our beliefs, and maturity means growing out of the limiting beliefs we adopted when we were young and becoming something more grounded and stable in service to other people.

ALL PEOPLE HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE A NEW SET OF HABITS, THOUGHT PATTERNS AND BEHAVIORS

The past does not determine the future.

Just because a person has succumbed to a set of thought patterns in the past doesn't mean they will do so for the rest of their life. No one else can take on the responsibility of making a person grow and change, other than that same person.

People must choose to grow through experiences rather than choose to be crushed by them.

We cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose how to respond to life as it changes and develops.

THE MEANING OF OUR COMMUNICATIONS IS DETERMINED BY OTHER PEOPLE, NOT BY US

As we go through life speaking our minds and hearts to others, we rarely consider how our message or attitude is received and interpreted by other people.
People must learn to observe the responses they receive from others when interacting with them rather than focusing exclusively on what they are saying and spreading their message thoughtlessly.

BEING BETTER IS BETTER THAN FEELING BETTER

The problem is that what makes us “feel” better is usually not what actually makes us “better.”

Feeling better can happen through a variety of different remedies; although some will seem better than others, they usually all give the same result.

The truth is that such remedies are only temporary diversions from our emotions or situations we face in life, and often prolong the underlying problem.

The truth is that such remedies are only temporary diversions from our emotions or situations we face in life, and often prolong the underlying problem.

To improve, you often need to feel worse for a period of time, which may seem counter-intuitive. We must be willing to feel worse in the short term to get better in the long term. Getting better means growing in self-awareness, understanding ourselves better, and adopting new strategies in our lives to help us become more effective and of greater value to other people.

OUR INTERNAL WORLD IS MANIFESTED IN OUR EXTERNAL WORLD

The power of thought is the key to creating our reality. Everything we perceive in the physical world has its origin in the invisible inner world of our thoughts and beliefs. To become masters of our destiny, we must first learn to control the nature of our habitual negative thought patterns. In this way, we begin to attract more of the things we actually want into our lives as we come to recognize this truth: Our thoughts create our reality.

Reality is an inside job.

PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE

If you don't address your wounds, you will end up hurting others. When you don't forgive others, you suffer. When you don't forgive yourself, you suffer. This is true on a physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual level.

It is very difficult to help a hurt person unless they want your help. If you are the one in pain, recognize that your pain is causing pain to other people and get help for yourself and the people around you. It really matters.

WHAT WE FOCUS ON HAS AN EMOTIONAL CONSEQUENCE

Thinking is more than just an activity: it actually manifests itself as a state of being.

It's not that we have to swallow our feelings about the life events we're experiencing (big and small) in fear that they will somehow define us. But what if we started questioning the thoughts that create our feelings, instead of creating discomfort and drama over something we may not remember even in a few days, we will prevent negativity from consuming us. We tend to spend much of our time focusing on things that don't really serve us when the thing that would actually help us the most is focusing our attention on what we really need. If we can pay attention and understand how our thoughts affect us, we will change who we are and how we experience the world. Start with a simple realization:

We can feel free, present and be open in this present if we choose to let go of the worries that hinder us.

PATCHES DO NOT HEAL WOUNDS

Addressing the root of the problem means learning to identify and break out of the limiting beliefs and destructive thought patterns that we developed earlier in life. Destructive thought patterns are repetitive, unhelpful thoughts. They serve no real purpose and lead to negative, debilitating emotions.

With practice, you can instead begin to deliberately choose to focus on constructive thoughts—thoughts that help you deal effectively with everyday situations.

By becoming more aware of your negative thought patterns, you bring a new level of awareness: you become aware. When this happens, you can step back from thoughts and become an observer. As a result, thoughts and emotions immediately begin to lose their grip on you. Every time you become aware of these destructive thought patterns, it's as if you've made a little scratch in that old habitual register. After a while, the record doesn't sound like it used to and, eventually, it doesn't sound like it anymore.
