Lung Meridian - Shou Tai yin - (Fei)

Functions:  The role of the lung is to assimilate Qi from the outside and to bring it inside the human body, thus allowing all the metabolisms of the major circulations to be synchronized.

Physically it is located above all the Zang Fu Therefore its energy meridian direction must necessarily be to descend downwards. If this does not happen we will see symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath.

It is no coincidence that in the energy circle of the circadian cycle of the 12 main meridians and the lung channel the energy flow that crosses the body over the course of 24 hours starts. After all, when we are born, breathing is the first movement carried out by the infant to channel air into the lungs and Qi into the meridians autonomously. But let's see now in a very schematic way all the characteristics of this organ:

  • Lung governs Qi
  • The Lung is in charge of defense
  • Its opening organs are nose and skin
  • Il Polmone is the seat of the Po

The Lung governs the Qi: The Lung takes care of assimilating the Qi through breathing and the pores of the skin, and of spreading it to all the peripheries of the body, throwing it downwards between 3.00 and 5.00 in the morning. Qi released from the Lung (upper organ) is collected by the Kidney (lower organ). Precisely from the Yang kidney which, through its heating function, allows the Gu Qi (Nutritive Energy) of the Spleen to rise upwards and join the Kong Qi of the air, to then be mixed by the heart organ and transformed into Blood and Qi actually circulating in the body; which will push the blood inside the blood vessels spreading it everywhere.

The Lung is in charge of defense: The Lung governs the Wei Qi (defensive energy of the human body). Thanks to the warming action of the kidney Yang during its upward ascent, it transforms the water in the body into water vapor which will hydrate the skin thus allowing the wei qi (defensive energy) to flow between the skin and muscles and to protect the body from harmful external energies such as cold, wind, humidity and frost. If the Wei qi is weak, the body itself will automatically be weak and will get sick more easily.

Its opening organs are nose and skin: The Lung is the organ most in contact with the outside and its opening points are both the nose and the skin of the body. From both the lung organ assimilates Qi from outside and spreads it throughout the organism. The nose is the airway of breathing and the skin is able to absorb Qi from the surrounding air and from the sun through its pores. The function of the lung in controlling the pores can be seen during sweating, these in fact control their opening and closing. Spontaneous daily sweats and without any apparent reason for physical effort are due to a lung Qi deficiency.

The Lung is the seat of the Po: The Po is the Shen aspect of the lung. It is the ability to record and subsequently apply all the procedural memories of the human being linked both to the instinct of the species and learned in the course of life through continuous practice.

For example the involuntary automatisms of the body the heartbeat, the act of breathing, growing, walking and so on. There is no need for someone to teach us them, it is our instinct that leads us to carry them out because they are recorded in our DNA at the level of cellular memories. The responsibility for this registration is entrusted to the Po.

Furthermore, the Po is also responsible for the ability to learn through the continuous repetition of body movements. Such as rollerblading, cycling, monotonous work on an assembly line.

In other words, it records the routine of movements so that the body knows itself how to act. It is like a genetic computer that reacts to external solicitations by virtue of previously stored information. This is why it is said that the Po looks to the past and is introspective, because he refers to the experiences already lived and acting accordingly without thinking about whether it is right or wrong but just executes, net of any ethical evaluation and modification, a typical characteristic of the Shen from the heart.

LUNG 9 FOR PROTECTION

Using the Lung 9 acupuncture point supports the respiratory system, helps protect health and stay healthy.

Acupuncture point: Lung 9 (LU9)
Chinese name: Tai Yuan
English name: Great Abyss
Meridian element: Metal

Location: Lung 9 is located on the anterior lateral wrist crease or inside wrist crease where the thumb joins the wrist.

Using the Lung 9 point offers many benefits:
    • Helps the respiratory system
    • Strengthens the lungs
    • Promotes proper functioning of the lungs
    • Stimulates the entire Lung Meridian
    • Fights mucus and fluid buildup in the lungs
    • Helps relieve chest pains
Wind and cold are among the six external pathogens according to Chinese medicine. When the wind invades the body, the skin and lungs are the first to be affected. When cold enters the body, it takes away the energy that is needed to fight infection. These pathogenic elements can directly affect the functioning of the lungs, causing, for example, an accumulation of fluids.

The Lung 9 point is also a Yuan Source point, i.e. it acts as a direct link between the meridian and the lungs. Yuan Source points are particularly useful for regulating the functions of the corresponding internal organ, as they help balance the flow of energy and are often able to produce very rapid results.

I hope this article has been useful and that it can help you in the small problems that this meridian and its points can solve.
