Dear readers and friends,
Today we will introduce a very interesting and useful coaching concept to better understand ourselves and others: Learning styles.
As in every Life Coaching context we are examining, there are only small explanations and many questions. Finding these answers is our task, discovering ourselves to then improve ourselves and loving ourselves for who we are is the ultimate goal. As has already been said in several articles:
“A question at the right time can change your life or at least the vision you have of it.”
Once again I ask you not to substitute an expert for this article, if you need help there are the structures and personnel suitable for this purpose, contact them.
LEARNING STYLES
Most of the problems we encounter in life are emotional, and the quality of our relationships depends on our attunement to our emotions. Internal representational processing is how we experience life on a sensory level (ie how we internalize our external experiences) so you must first understand and identify how you process your everyday experiences.
Our representational processing is not just limited to how we learn best, but how we react to others and appreciate differences. On a social and global scale, we go to war with nations over differences. When people do not unconditionally accept the differences of others, antipathy arises. Antipathy turns into hatred and hatred can turn into war. If we judge people based on how they look, sound, and even smell in accordance with our personal representational systems, we will be judging people on a partial, superficial level that does not take into account the most significant aspects of who they are as a person
When we learn to communicate with people in a language they can relate to according to their preferred learning style, people will believe we are on the same wavelength as them.
All of our relationships require us to choose to connect with someone through their preferred learning styles. The following sections analyze the main representation systems. As you read them, try to identify which representational system you use the most.
REPRESENTATIVE SYSTEMS
VISUAL: An individual who operates primarily through a visual representation system will do so by using their sight (vision) for memory, decision making, and their primary contact with the world will be through their eyes.
Visual processing absorbs a lot of information, and an image can contain more information than sound or feeling. Individuals with this preference for the representational system are often very good at seeing the big picture and planning for the long term. For example, Walt Disney, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Albert Einstein were all skilled visualizers.
Here are some other clues that might help you identify people who have a preference for visual processing.
• You will notice that they pay special attention to their appearance, the appearance of their home, and the appearance of others.
• They may have difficulty concentrating on many visual tasks.
• They speak faster, breathe more deeply and often develop tension in the upper body. There is much more information in a picture than in a verbal description.
• They use visual information to remember, plan and make decisions.
• In most cases they need to see a picture of what you are talking about.
• They are better at remembering faces than names.
• They prefer to see your facial reactions in person, rather than talking on the phone, so they can fully understand what you are saying.
AUDITORY: The processing of the auditory system is linear and sequential. Visual system processing handles much more information. It's like a recorded message of what an image should look like.
Someone who operates primarily with an auditory representational system typically:
• They are more aware of a subtle change in the tone of your voice and are more responsive to certain tones of voice.
• Learn best by listening and asking questions.
• Likes to take part in discussions and prefers to communicate through spoken language rather than in writing.
• Discuss problems and prefer to have someone available who can bounce ideas off.
• They think sequentially and are able to remember instructions and directions more easily.
• Need to be listened to.
KINESTHETICAL: Someone with a kinesthetic preference, predominantly maps feelings and therefore has a heightened sense of body awareness.
Those with a kinesthetic preference will tend to:
• Be more aware of your body and feelings and respond to physical rewards and touch.
• Speak more slowly than others because they need time to get in touch with their feelings about the topic.
• Learn by doing, moving or touching.
• Make decisions based on how they feel.
• Dress and comb your hair paying more attention to comfort than aesthetics.
READING AND WRITING: Someone with reading and writing preference maps using visual style with repetition and emulation. Traditional education is tailored to these types of students and is a learning style imposed on the majority. People who naturally learn to read and write tend to:
•Prefer learning through words.
•He takes copious, detailed notes and is an avid reader.
•Be able to translate concepts into written form.
•They prefer to express themselves through writing rather than oral presentations.
