Acupressure for Shoulder and Elbow: Unlock Mobility and Relieve Pain

Dearest Friends and Readers,

The well-being of the body flows through the harmony of energy along the meridians. When postural tension, stress, or repetitive strain block our energy, areas like the shoulders and elbows are often the first to feel it, manifesting as stiffness, joint pain, or localized inflammation.

Through the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the ancient practice of acupressure, we can stimulate strategic key points to dissolve blocks, restore the flow of Qi, and rediscover full freedom of movement.

Key Points for Treatment

1. GB21 (Jian Jing) – Shoulder Well

Location: On the crest of the trapezius muscle, midway between the base of the neck and the outer tip of the shoulder.

Action: Relieves scapular tension, eases rheumatic pain, and reduces reflex stiff neck associated with shoulder tightness.

Caution note: Strictly to be avoided during pregnancy.

2. LI11 (Quchi) – Pool at the Crook (Elbow)

Location: At the outer end of the elbow crease, bending the arm at a 90-degree angle.

Action: It is the primary point for reducing inflammation, easing discomfort related to epicondylitis ("tennis elbow"), and improving joint flexibility.

3. LI15 (Jian Yu) – Shoulder Bone

Location: In the anterior depression of the shoulder joint, which becomes prominent when raising the arm slightly.

Action: Promotes joint unblocking and improves range of motion in cases of periarthritis or chronic tension.

How to Apply Pressure Correctly

To get the maximum benefits from your acupressure session, follow these simple steps:

  • Use your thumbs or the base of your palm to apply targeted pressure.
  • Apply consistent and deep pressure that feels effective but never painful.
  • Hold the pressure for 1–2 minutes on each individual point.
  • Breathe deeply throughout the process, accompanying the release with a gentle arm stretch.
  • Repeat 2–3 times a day, treating both sides to maintain energy balance.

Mindful Movement: Combine acupressure with gentle stretching and joint mobility exercises.

Prevention: Avoid functional overloading and prolonged sudden movements.

Listening to Your Body: If the pain is acute or persistent, always consult an expert or a specialized doctor. Acupressure acts as a valuable holistic support and does not replace professional medical care.
