Spirit Animals, Totems, and Animal Spirits: Meaning and Shamanic Tradition

In the shamanic tradition, there are many ways to define animal spirits, and each term contains a profound meaning, linked to the function these presences assume in our lives.

It is called a Power Animal because it carries a special strength that can be "given" to those who connect with it, supporting spiritual practices and inner journeys.
It is called a Guide Animal because it accompanies human beings towards their own fulfillment, helping them to know themselves more deeply.
It is also a Guardian Spirit , as it protects from negative energies or entities, especially in the non-ordinary planes of reality.
It can be considered an Ally , a companion with whom a relationship of mutual trust is built over time.
Finally, it is a Spirit Animal , that is, a living presence, endowed with its own consciousness.

Then there is the term Totem Animal , which has its roots in ancestral cultures and represents the animal associated with a clan or tribe, a symbol of identity and protection for the entire community.

The Origins of the Spirit Animal

The idea of spirit animals is as old as the world itself.

Ancestral populations lived in profound symbiosis with nature: animals were not only a source of sustenance, but also spiritual teachers and guides. Hunting, for example, was considered a sacred act. Every creature possessed a spirit, and for this it was honored and thanked.

Humans approached animals as equals, with respect and awareness. Cubs or pregnant females were not hunted, and a balance with nature was always maintained.

Even in ancient mythologies we find this connection:

  • Artemis, goddess of the woods, was associated with the deer
  • Minerva, symbol of wisdom, to the owl

Many deities manifested themselves in animal or hybrid form, as in the Egyptian tradition:

  • Bastet, goddess with feline features
  • Anubis, god with the head of a jackal

Animals were therefore considered sacred, to the point of becoming symbols of identity of human groups.

Totem Animals: Meaning and Symbolism

The terms Totem Animal and Spirit Animal are often used synonymously today, but originally they had distinct meanings.

The Totem Animal represented the symbolic animal of a family or tribe. It was depicted on sacred objects—totems—to indicate the bond between that group and the animal's spirit.

According to the definition of the Treccani dictionary, the totem is:

an animal, plant, or phenomenon associated with a social group, often considered an ancestor or protector, towards which respect is shown and which cannot be killed or hunted.

In Native American tribes, each clan was associated with an animal that reflected the qualities of its members. For example:

  • cunning → Fox clan

  • strength → Bear clan

All members of the clan were considered descendants of that animal, and for this reason precise rules applied: they could not hunt it nor marry among themselves.

From totem to inner guidance

Today the bond with totem animals is no longer collective, but mainly individual.

A person can feel deeply connected to an animal without belonging to a clan. In this case, the animal becomes a mirror of the soul , capable of revealing hidden aspects of oneself and supporting one's growth.

According to some beliefs, each individual receives an animal guide at birth, similar to the concept of a guardian angel: a presence that accompanies, protects, and advises throughout life.

The power animal and its qualities

Each animal embodies a specific energy and a particular wisdom:

  • 🐦 Crow → magic, transformation
  • 🦅 Hawk → vision and clarity
  • 🦉 Owl → intuition and inner knowledge

Working with your spirit animal allows you to see your life from new perspectives, make more informed decisions, and face internal challenges.

Cultivating your relationship with your spirit animal

The connection with the spirit animal develops over time, through practices such as:

  • the shamanic journey
  • channeling

This relationship must be nurtured daily. A simple way to do so is to symbolically embody its qualities :

  • if it is a running animal → move, explore
  • if it flies → broaden the vision
  • if he is curious → seek new experiences

It's also important to listen deeply to your intuition: if your spirit animal shows suspicion about a situation, trust it.

Over the course of life, other spirit animals may also appear, temporary or linked to specific paths (water, air, land, etc.).

The Nine Spirit Animals and Spiritual Directions

According to Native American tradition, each person is accompanied by nine animals , each associated with a direction and aspect of life:

  • East → spirituality, enlightenment
  • South → emotions, inner child
  • West → physical size and realization
  • North → mind, wisdom and communication
  • Above → connection with the sky and the dream
  • Below → rootedness and interiority
  • Inside → sacred space and personal truth
  • Right → masculine energy, courage
  • Left → feminine energy, relationships

These animals represent inner forces that guide our path and help us find balance between body, mind, and spirit.

The world of spirit animals is an invitation to slow down, listen, and reconnect with nature and with ourselves.

Whether you call it a power animal, spirit guide, or totem animal, the message is the same: within every living being lies an ancient wisdom, ready to support us on our journey.

Rediscovering this connection means learning to see the world with new eyes—and perhaps, ourselves too.
