The term dowsing from - dowsing- means sensitivity to things and indicates a phenomenon known by the peoples of the most remote antiquity who used the wand and the pendulum.
The radiesthesic phenomenon is based on the principle that each body, in addition to emitting its own radiations, is hit by those emitted by other bodies.
Benedetto Lavagna, one of the best Italian dowsers, defines dowsing as a super normal sensitivity to extrasensory radiation, a sensitivity that makes man capable of a vast cognitive power.
Henry de France defines dowsing as the art of stimulating intuition in order to discover what does not fall directly under the senses, using a process that allows to obtain an intuitive cognition expressed by an involuntary movement to which a conventional meaning is given . Therefore, the more sensitive the dowser is, the more intuitive he is. And by intuition he draws the truth from that inner voice that God places in the heart of those who listen to him.
To clarify and to break down any unjust prevention - dowsing - considered art by some and science by others, it has nothing to do with magic and any sort of occultism, it has nothing initiatory that can make it disliked by the Church.
Perhaps dowsing is more of an art than a science and as such requires a minimum of study and application, as well as an important dose of personal inclination. This art is also practiced by religious men, including many priests. Let us not forget the founder of modern dowsing, Abbot Mermet who passed away in 1937, author of many fundamental works for his study and a most worthy man of the Church.
But dowsing has in any case been opposed by a part of the church and if it is true that many religious have dealt with and are dealing with these studies, it is equally true that the abbot Carrié is quoted in this regard in his book " Hydroscopy and metalloscopography " gives a scientific explanation to the phenomenon, it is also true that completely different criteria are opposed.
